Whether you’re a nature lover or a history buff, this expedition has something for everyone.
Experience the Balkans in a unique and unforgettable way with ME. Don’t forget to bring your passport and join us on this once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Itinerary

On all the paddle boarding days we will set off after breakfast. Lunch will be on the go and will consist mainly of high energy snacks to sustain you during the paddling. We always select accommodation/camp sites in the logistically most convenient locations. However, if the bookings are made for high season or at short notice, the preferred accommodation/campsite, from our itinerary may not be available. In this instance we find the best alternative of a similar standard.

Highlights

  • International paddleboarding adventure through Balkan landscapes, reaching the Adriatic Sea
  • Explore historical sites, indulge in local food, and experience wild camping
  • Suitable for nature and history enthusiasts seeking a unique Balkan experience
  • Once-in-a-lifetime journey combining outdoor adventure, cultural immersion, and stunning scenery
Day 1: Arrival

The meeting point for this adventure is Village Virpazar. Depending on where you land, there is a 35 minute drive from Podgorica or an 1:30 hour drive from Tivat to Virpazar.

During the afternoon you’ll have time to get your gear packed ready for our cross-country SUP adventure.

On the first night with us we will have a group dinner and you will stay in a campsite accommodation in Virpazar.

Day 2: Murići to Bobovište

After breakfast at the campsite we will drive an hour to our start point – Murići. Here we will visit the nuns on the island monastery of Beška, energise ourselves with some homemade pomegranate juice and set off on the first leg of our epic wilderness adventure. Meandering past tiny islands we will head to shore for lunch at a fisherman’s shack.

Following a rest and snacks we will paddle further south to the village of Bobovište, the penultimate settlement on the Montenegrin side of Lake Skadar, where we will end the day’s 8 km paddle. Here we will set up camp with the remainder of the day spent swimming, relaxing or exploring the surrounding nature before the dinner and an evening accompanied by amazing views of the stars.

Day 3: Bobovište to Ckla

After breakfast, the second leg of our voyage begins. We will head south to Ckla, a small village which is the last settlement on the Montenegrin side of the lake. The vast expanse of water and the views of the foreboding, yet epic, “cursed” Prokletije Mountain Range of Albania won’t make you forget where you are. Throughout the 9 km journey there are plenty of places to stop, jump and swim in the beautiful lake. The second night of camping will be just as beautiful as the first, with another dinner by the campfire.

Day 4: Ckla to Shkodra

After breakfast our day will start with a bit of paperwork to get our border transit documents stamped. Once complete we will be ready to dig our paddles into the lake once more! In the morning we will complete the final stretch of Skadar Lake before it turns into the River Bojana. Within 3 km of paddling we will officially enter Albanian territory, passing the beautiful village of Zogay on our way to Shkodra.

Before we reach the city, on our 10 km journey, we will stop at the well known fisherman’s village of Shiroka, famous for the amazing fish restaurants on the shores of the lake. Here we will dine on fresh fish accompanied by delicious Albanian white wine. After lunch/dinner we will enter the historical city of Shkodra, where we will be staying in a cosy house and you will have a free evening and the opportunity to explore the city.

Day 5: Shkodra to Sv. Djordje

On day 5 we make the most of staying in one of Albania’s oldest and most historic towns. Following breakfast, our first activity is a visit to Rozafa Castle which rises imposingly from a rocky hill, 130 m above sea level overlooking the city surrounded by the Buna and Drin rivers. After the castle visit it is time to leave this important economic and cultural centre and continue our SUP adventure.

This is the longest leg of paddling, 21 km, which will take us downriver towards the sea. We will paddle until we reach the border with Montenegro enjoying the wilderness and beauty of the river as we go. We will have dinner and spend the night camping under the stars again.

Day 6: Sv. Djordje to the Adriatic Sea

Day 6 is the moment we have been waiting for – our final destination, where the River Bojana joins the Adriatic Sea. The mouth of the River Bojana is 60 m wide and the water is wonderfully fresh and clean. This last day of paddling makes this adventure extra special travelling on the border (which runs through the middle of the river) for the majority of this 15 km leg. Three km before we reach the sea we re-enter Montenegro – a bittersweet moment. After all, this destination has been the whole aim of our trip, but it also means that the SUP adventure is almost over!

Our final destination is Ada Bojana and Velika Plaža – 13 km long sandy beach. Here we will soak up the sun, swim and relax and swim in the Adriatic Sea. For our final night we will have a bbq and sleep in a house on the river.

Day 7: Return to Virpazar and departure

Breakfast on the house terrace over the river is where we will have our farewell meal. You’ll have time to take the opportunity to swim in the river before returning to Virpazar. If you’d prefer to stay a bit longer on the coast, we recommend that you visit Ulcinj, a haven for kitesurfers.

If you are staying longer in Montenegro you can always join us on another adventure 😊

  • I went on the komarnica packraft tour with Gigo. Amazing experience! The river is a hidden gem in Montenegro. Not very accessible but once you are there, the nature is so wonderful! I never packrafted on a Whitewater river before, but Gigo gave great explanations and safety measures. 100% recommend!

  • Gigo is very knowledgeable, offers excellent customer service, is punctual, offers tailored trips, gear is in great shape. If it was up to us he would well and truely deserve the Montenegrin business awarded of the year. We hope to come back.

We spent a day packrafting in the Tara Canyon with Mio.
It was a wonderful experience!!
Our guide, Mio, had a very educational approach for our first packrafting experience, which was safe and enjoyable!
The equipment was of very high quality.
Mio has a very respectful approach to nature, which we loved.
And as a bonus, the lunch was excellent, with wraps and muffins made with local products 😋
The river was MAGNIFICENT 😍

Our half-day packrafting excursion was exceptional! The boats are very easy to maneuver for beginners and we go at our own pace, in the magnificent setting of the Tara River! Mio and his friend are very professional, super helpful and friendly! The picnic is homemade (and the cook deserves to open his own restaurant)! To do without hesitation!!

I’ve now been on two trips with Balkan Adventures, the Lake Skadar Kayak over 5-days and the Tara River Packraft 3-day trip. On both trips I’ve been blown away by both the scenery of the region and the dedication of the team. Most recently on the Tara River the guys once again beat expectations on their dedication to ensuring my party of 7 had the best experience. An amazing few days of seeing, eating, and enjoying culture which otherwise would not have been possible without the planning of the team. Thanks once again for your effort, I only hope others find you for a similar adventure!

This was my third trip with Gigo’s team and every tour has been excellent. This year myself and my husband and four sons and a girlfriend went on the four day pack rafting experience on the Tara river. The whole trip was excellently organised and the team were knowledgeable and fun. Myself and my husband ( both 60) who had never done pack rafting before enjoyed everything about the trip - the stunning scenery, learning new skills as well as very generous portions of local food! The team ensured we felt safe at all times and that we had an excellent experience that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys nature and would like to try a new activity in a fun and safe way.

Went packrafting on the Tara River, and it was absolutely incredible. The guides were fantastic, and the canyon was incredibly untouched. It was such a unique experience and I’d absolutely recommend.

We had a super day packrafting on the Tara river with Manu, he was a fantastic guide, the group was small and the route was beautiful and not too difficult for our first time packrafting, but there were still plenty of fun sections of rapids!
